Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Is recording my conversation with my spouse illegal?

My soon to be ex is often verbally abusive when no one is around. However, he is very pleasant when people are around. He is also lying to family, friends and his attorney at times. Therefore, I have decided to record our conversations. I am doing so without his knowledge but just happen to think....is that legal??? They are conversations between he and I, other parties are not involved. Thanks for your help.
