Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

What rights do I have over our belongings?

Me and my boyfriend are living together but we argue alot. Everytime a fight comes he tells me to leave and threatens me that if i leave him i will be left with nothing. Our furniture is under my moms name and everything else we have was bought with both of our money. I work full time to help pay our bills. He helped me get a car from the dealer and told me that no matter what happened between us the car would be mine, now he says he'll call the cops and say it was stollen if i try to take it. What do i do? He's mentally and verbally abusive and some fights have gotten very physical. I do not want to end up with nothing and i don't want him to ruin my mothers credit like his.

There isn't really clear law on these situations. I'd protect myself if I were you and sort of grab what you can. Frankly I think the car would be the only clear thing since there's a written title when there's a car. There are lawsuits to get property returned but those are rare unless we're talking about real expensive property.

I agree with Peter. If you get to a point where you know its over, take everything you think is yours, move out, get a place (preferably where he does not know) and tell him to sue you. He will almost certainly not.
