Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

I was just served a summons for the dissolution of my marriage this morning and have a case management conference in 9 days from today. The conferrence is in Illinois and I currently reside in Florida. I understand it always a good idea to appear, but do I need to actually appear for this conference? i.e. if it is just a determination of whether or not we can continue with divorce proceedings I do not see a need to attend.. any advice?

You won't get into any trouble if you don't attend, however, your failure to appear is probably not in your best interests not to do something. If you don't file an appearance, then the issues raised in your wife's petition for dissolution will be determined by the court without any input from you. This can be very costly to you.

Your best option is to hire an attorney in Illinois to handle the case for you and that way you will avoid the expense of flying up here whenever there is a court date.

At the very least you should contact your wife's attorney and discuss the matter with him/her.
