Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My sons father was just paroled from prison in MI. I want to make sure he has limited rights and am looking for a lawyer. I now live in IL, so do I need an IL lawyer or a MI lawyer?

Has there ever been a case filed anywhere? Is there a support order? If no case has been filed, if you have lived here for 6 months, then IL has jurisdiction over your child. If you have lived here less than 6 months, MI may have jurisdiction. So depending on where you have lived controls whom you need. If there has never been a case, is Dad on the birth certificate. If not he is not legally the Dad until a court says so. Merely being on the birth certificate does give him any rights. He has to go to court to obtain a court order for visitation. Why was he in prison? It may be a basis for denial of visitation, or limiting it to supervised visitation,
