Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My spouse filed a petition for dissolution of marriage. I filed my response/appearance and a counter petition. I received their response to my counter petition. I just received a notice of motion for pleading request presented as petition for temporary custody, child support, maintenance and other relief from my spouses lawyer for next Wednesday. My question is do I have to respond to this notice or petition or show up in court with my documentation? And if I have to respond how do I ask for a continuance being that I just received it?

You have to show up in court or call the attorney and ask for time to respond. However, if your spouse is filing for custody of your children, it would be wise to consult with or hire a lawyer. If you decide to go, ask the Judge for 28 days in which to respond and he/she will set a date for June. Use that time wisely.
