Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

I was given a supboena the other day to appear in court, about changing the last name of what I thought was my daughter(voluntary act of paternity). I am not fighting this, i saw a paternity test that showed that I am not the father. My question is, could I get in trouble( warrant issued?) if I didn't appear in court? I will be in Mexico for a wedding(non-refundable) at the time of the court date. Do I need to contact the court to reschedule?

Yes you can get in trouble --. You can contact the law office that had the subpoena issued, and see if they'll be willing to continue the matter. No guarantees but the longer you wait the more difficult it may be -- other people's schedules are involved. You are entitled to your own legal counsel, however, and you should consider that because at some point you will be required to appear and if you don't know what is going on you could be affecting your rights.
