Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Hello,

My name is wayne and I wanted to know why I need a lawyer. I went to file for divorce in Macomb, IL. and was told I need a lawyer. I have been apart from my wife now 6 years and the marriage is over. I can not afford a lawyer. The clerk stated that the judge wanted me to have one. I am still married and she said if I have been married for 8 years or more that I need a lawyer. We don't have any assets together and our kids are 22 adn 20 years old. What are my options?

Move to another county. The law doesn't require you to hire an attorney, but the judge is the king of his or her courtroom.
