Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

When my wife (of almost 3 years) and I had a baby recently, the hospital would not allow me (the father) to sign any of the child's paperwork (for vaccines, etc.) despite my wife asking them to let me, due to the fact that she was trying to get whatever sleep she could after the labor. In addition, the lady who came to fill out the birth certificate had me leave the room (this included when the child was legally named) only to have me come back in and "verify" the information. I feel that my rights as the father have been violated. My rights begin when he is born, right? Not after he has been discharged several days after birth, right? This was in Rockford, IL, by the way.
