Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

If I was awarded a settlement from a case involving the United States Dept. of Agriculture (government), is that settlement taxable? Also, isn't my lawyer responsible for giving me all transcripts from this case for my records free of charge since he was awarded his fees?

The tax question should be directed at a tax expert such as a CPA. That person would be best to answer.

With respect to your file and the material in it: generally no. While you are entitled to get copies of your file, you have to pay for the cost of its reproduction. Under the law, your attorney is obligated to keep your file for 7 years-so if you want something that is in it, while you are entitled to have a copy, you have to pay for it.
