Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

I backed into my neighbor's garage

How much of the repair costs am I liable for? The garage is not new. My back bumper had only some white paint from the garage trim. I feel I only cracked the wood trim; however, owner had entire door frame replaced and charged me $400. Is that fair? I looking for some legal advice with regard to new repairs to old buildings, upgrading (vs. just repairing) building at my expense, hiring a repair person and having building fixed without consulting me first, expecting me to pay repairs after all work has been done, etc.

Re: I backed into my neighbor's garage

You are only liable for the actual damage that you did. In other words a repair of the wood trim to restore it to the condition that it was in prior to your actions. He did not have to consult you before doing the repairs. However, if he proceeded to repair or replace without your agreement as to the amount and extent, he is doing so at his own peril. Good luck.
