How can a case be dismissed for want of prosecution 12 days after the case was filed, and without any notification to the plaintiff?

It may happen in error. You need to file a motion to vacate the DWP- there is a fee attached to the Motion. If you can show that the clerk has made an error in the case and/or you were not notified and can prove so, then you may ask the judge to order the clerk to refund the filing fee for the motion to vacate. You must move quickly.
