Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Name change after marriage

i was married in Iowa and when i filled out the marriage license, the clerk did not inform me that by changing my name on the marriage license that it would be a legal permanent name change, therefore by mistake i signed my maiden name. because of the rushed situation (my husband was deploying) and because my husband wasn't present to renotarize the paperwork i couldn't redo my marriage license and i had to take it as it was. is there a way to change my name to my husband's now? i have called the court house in my county (hancock, IL) and they say i have to go to iowa to change my name, but in iowa it looks to be a drawn out deal. do i have to go through the legal name change process and pay the petition fee? or is there a shorter route? i need to get a new drivers license soon so i would like to take care of this asap.

Re: Name change after marriage

Sorry to say but there is no short way to change your name. You will need to file a petition for name change. However, depending upon how long you have lived in Illinois you should be able to file the petition in IL.
