If a defendant files an unsigned motion for extension of time to answer, it is filed by the court clerk, but then later struck out by the judge on the grounds that it was unsigned, did the defendant ''appear'' before the court?

Your question is unclear. Please be more specific as to what you mean by appear? Are you talking about a general appearance? Are you talking about appearing for th motion?
