Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Collecting Illinois-based assets from Iowa small claims judgement

I recently won a small claims judgement in Iowa against an ex-roommate who is a college student in Iowa but a permanant resident of Illinois. She refuses to pay the judgement so I must collect another way. The problem is, all of her assets aside from personal belongings are in Illinois. The only real asset I know of that can easily be used to collect this judgement is a bank account. How easy is it to collect my Iowa judgement from her Illinois bank account, and how do I go about doing that? Thank you very much for the assitance.

Re: Collecting Illinois-based assets from Iowa small claims judgement

You must register the judgment in Illinois, which will require you to obtain from the Iowa court a certified and exemplified copy of the written order entered by the court rendering judgment in your favor. A certified and exemplified copy of the judgment is a copy of the judgment which the clerk of the court has certified is true, accurate, and correct, and which the chief judge of the court has certified that the clerk's certification is correct. With this certified, exemplified copy, you file it with the court in Illinois in the community where the assets are, and have the court sieze the assets. You should hire a lawyer in Illinois to do this all for you. Call me if you need help. Larry Stein (630) 221-1755.
