Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

confiscated property

i was living with my father and his now ex-wife...my boyfriend was deployed with the military he is military police so i was holding on to some of his personal property specifically several be-be guns that were expensive replicas... and other personal items of his all though i told her the be-be guns were there in my room she called the police when i was not home saying that she was going through my things and happened to find them and that she was afraid i was going to hurt her...in chicago be-be guns are illegal, i was unaware of that as the law was passed earlier that month and my boyfriend was returning that weekend to get his things. the be-be guns were confiscated and we were unable to get them back...my question is can i sue her for the money to replace them?

Re: confiscated property

Chances are the answer is "No."

Being unaware of the existing law is not a defense. It is your responsibility to know the law and not break it. if you broke the law and your guns were confiscated as the result, there is no one to blame.

I hope this helps,
