Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
What defines gift?
My ex-boyfriend gave me some gifts (a framed picture and bronze sculpture). He won't give me back my keepsake items in his storage unit until I give back the art. But they were gifts? I feel like he's holding my son's baby memorabilia hostage - and being a real ass!

Re: What defines gift?
If the items truly are gifts (i.e., he did not expect anything in return for giving them to you, such as payment), then he has no right to ask for their return. There is no obligation to return a gift to the giver once the relationship terminates.
Contact your local police about how to go about getting your stuff from his storage unit.
