Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

false statements

A few local officials are making false statements to a family members employer, that is causing her problems at work, it is also effecting her mental and physical well being. Statements that she is leaving work several times a day, all to get her to resign as a board. I talked with our local sheriff who apperently is friends with one of the individuals and now threats are being made, as far as saying now that person that talked to the sheriff about legal action is going to pay. Do you think we have a case?

Hello. Slander is a legal action that is alive and well. In other words you can file a lawsuit against a person or people when they make statements about you that are not true. I believe you have a case. Of course the issue of damages must be considered. Mental distress would have to be substantiated by a medical professional who has treated the victim of this slander. Medical records of treatment and costs, etc.
