Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Former family denying access to property

My sister and mother are denying me access to my remaining belongings in my mother's house. I have already called that town's police and they have said that they can't do anything because it is my word against hers. My property has my name on it. My sister has said that if my husband or I make any more attempts to schedule a date and time to pick it up, they will issue a restraining order. All we have done has made phone calls to schedule an appointment. We have been civil. They have been hostile. These belongings have great sentimental value. I want to retrieve them and than never have anymore contact with these people. What can I do? Can they even issue a restraining order if I am just trying to schedule a time to get my property? Isn't is the responsibility of the police to help me out?

Re: Former family denying access to property

As long as it is your mother's home, the police cannot bring you in there just on your representations. If you can prove the things you want belong to you, the only way to retrieve them with the help of the police would be through a court order. If you obtain such an order, then the police would likely assist you.
