harassment
my wife left a company 3 months ago, since then they have contacted her several times to ''answer questions'' she has abliged and said nothing. recently she tired of the constant calls. i phoned the owner and asked nicely for him to stop calling and to leave us alone. he then accused my wife of starting rumors about him personally. i assured him he was a fool. the owner of the company sent us a letter that he was upset that she lied about why she was quitting and where she was going to work. (she didnt want them to know) he furthermore stated that if we didnt stop the rumors (which we never started) that he would seek legal recourse. where do i stand?

From what you have told us: Unless your wife is under a contractual obligation with her former employer, she has no duty to take their call and to answer any questions as to why she has left or where she works etc... If her former employer is under the impression that she has started rumors about the boss, then you have already set him straight. You should not respond to any verbal communication. You obviously cannot prevent them from filing suit under whatever theory they may find appealing. You should also talk to a local attorney and give him/her all the facts about the situation and see what he or she says. It will be the best couple of hundred dollars you can spend.
