Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Do I have to have a lawyer in a civil suit?

An attorney that was once involved in an estate matter for me has sent me a bill for bogus charges that I don't agree with. (The estate is closed) He said he will reduce the amount by 2/3 if I pay in 2 wks., otherwise, he will sue me.

I have no intention of paying because I dispute these charges and always have, but he seems to be trying to blackmail me. My question: if he files a lawsuit, am I obliged to get a lawyer to defend this, even if I don't have the money to hire one?

If you are sued, you are required to file an answer within 28 days otherwise, everything contained in the complaint against you will be deemed as admitted.

You do not *have* to get an attorney but it is *highly recommended* since you, in all likelihood, will lose based on technicalities rather than the merit of your defense.

Good luck,
