What is the maximum amount that I can charge in an oral contract that does not require to be in written in Illinois? Thanks.

There are specific things that must be in writing regardless of amount (real estate, suretyship, contracts to last more than a year...etc.)-- but for general merchandise ("sales of goods") $499.99, since the Uniform Commercial Code says "$500 or more". If you want a more specific answer, you'll need to give the particulars of the kind of contract.
