Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

notices in mail

Our son in chicago recieved 20 letters in the mail from attorney's in the area who want to represent him in a misdeamenor case that he knows nothing about. Should he contact these attorney's or the police? Is this a scam?

Re: notices in mail

This may not be a scam but it sure sounds like ambulance chasing. Your son should report the lawyers to the Illinois Disciplinary Commisssion. It also sounds like you should contact the local courthouse and ask the clerk for the criminal division to do a computer search on your son. If he turns up, you should hire a reputable criminal attorney.

Re: notices in mail

It is perfectly legal and ethical in Illinois for attorneys to mail advertisements to prospective clients as long as the mailing contains a disclaimer such as legal advertisement on the envelop and meets any other ethical obligations. I would call the courthouse to see if your son has a pending case.
