cannot obtain personal property back

Played in a band at friends house in illinois, quit playing, left perscussion set there long time. Have tried to phone friend for return of set, no answer, no reply. Now 2 years later finally run into friend, ask for set back - he says ''no way - if I was to charge you storage you would owe me money''. Whats a musician to do? I want to take him to small claims court but do I have leg to play on?

You haven't got much to lose but your filing fee, at this point. However, it would seem that you've abandoned your kit at your friends. Why would you wait so long to get your gear back?
