Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Personal Harassment

A guy I used to be friends with and with whom I have had a past sexual relationship is harassing me via text messaging. I have asked him numerous times to stop, but he continues to send sexually explicit text messages to me and my boyfriend and when my boyfriend stepped in and told him to stop he (the harasser) started to send sexually explicit messages about my past with him (the harasser) along with very specific threats against both me and my boyfriend. He has multiple prior charges for battery and I am afraid to take these threats lightly. I have tried to handle this on my own but I should not have to put up with this and I'm tired of the harassment and frankly I'm beginning to be frightened. What are my options and is there any legal basis for taking action?
