Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

pet ownership

i am 20 years old still living at home with my father, he is currently going through a divorce with someone who is not my mother, when i was 17 my dad bought me a dog, i am the sole owner according to the paperwork from the breeder and the dog is registered to me alone, she withheld my dog for 4 months, since she stole the paper work and i was unable to get any paper work to prove it was my dog until recently...when it was brought into divorce court(which its not marital property because it is my dog alone, my father is not on the paperwork) she claimed it was a gift from my father for thier wedding even though i had owned the dog for almost 3 years before they were married...i have the papers to prove it but i was told at the last court date that she will get ownership of the dog, because apparently having the dog in her possesion has made her the legal owner...this doesnt make sense to me, she was withholding the dog for that time and i was unable to get the dog because she threatened to call the police if i went to her residence. i had signed affidavits from my old landlord and the breeder saying i was the owner of the dog...but yet she still has him. im not sure what i should do here.

Get a lawyer, if it's worth it to you to get your dog back. Unfortunately, oftentimes people representing themselves are not as effective as an attorney can be in getting the job done. You've got all the documents you need to show ownership, so even if she is allowed to keep the dog, you are entitled to some kind of compensation for your loss. Find a lawyer.
