Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Hello,

We have been having problems with our neighbor. They have a dog and we sometimes see them disobyeing the leash law. Sometimes they walk the dog without a leash. Once they were working in the front yard and the dog ran around free even though there was no fence. The other day the dog was in our front yard as my husband came home. I'm tired of them letting their dog run loose. I don't want to be concerned when I walk home from work or when I go for a walk with my small kids that the dog comes towards me because it's not leashed. We called the police many times and they also have talked to them about the leash law. It doesn't seem to be bothering the neighbors. They keep doing it regardless. All I want is for the police to enforce the law and for the neighbors to follow it. Obviously it seems that I am asking too much. So far the dog has not harmed anyone or damaged anything. But do I have to wait for that in order for something to get done? That is just stupid.

At this point I'm not sure about my options. Please advice! Thank you!!

Birgit

You could file a suit for creating a nuisance. There really is very little that you can do to force police action. You might also try speaking with the mayor or council person for your area of town. Good luck
