Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
Property
I previously resided with my boyfriend about 2 years ago. While I lived there I had cable service in my name and his name also appeared on the bills. When I moved out it was agreed that he would cancel the service for me and handle anything remaining on the bill. I even gave him a check w/ my portion of the last bill. Recently I ran a credit check on myself and there is a charge on there to a collection agency for approx. $848. Approx. $200 is for the bill, and the remainder is for the unreturned cable boxes. He insists that he gave the boxes back, but got no receipt or confirmation of this in writing. The cable company said that they were never returned and that he would have received a receipt if he returned them. Is there anything I can do to remove this from my name and have him pay for it since we made a verbal agreement for him to handle this?

Re: Property
Sue the ex. You can make him pay it back. If you clear the account contact the cable company, they may be willing to delete the negative credit if its paid. You also have the roght to add a small paragraph to the credit report to explain the problem.
