Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
Slandered
I work for the State of Illinois as a direct care provider for a unit that is made up of people sent to us as having committed crimes, but unfit to stand trial. A couple of weeks ago, one of these individuals told the unit administrator I had choked him and I was placed off the unit pending investigation. A couple of days after this I was informed by a ''lead worker'' on the unit that during the daily ''morning meeting'', in front of several of my co-workers and others present, the administrator referred to me as a ''liar'', that I had ''choked someone'', that I ''did not deserve to have a job and should be fired' and that I had ''issues and needed professional counseling''. A couple of days after this, the allegation against me was declared to be unfounded and I was able to return to work the unit. I filed a grievance with the local union and also an internal report against the administrator asking mainly for an apology, but none has come forth, and it is very stressful going to work everyday when you know someone has such negative feelings for you, and I cannot think of any reason why this person would feel so strongly to say such terrible, personal things about me. Thanking you in advance for any and all help you may be able to give me.

Re: Slandered
You should ask the person who has publicly defamed you to make a public apology and/or retract the false statements publicly. Depending on the facts of the case, your reputation at work, your relationship with your coworkers, you may or may not have a cause of action against your employer and the person who defamed you (your employer's agent).
I hope this helps,
