I have attached a quick summary regarding the law of defamation. Basically, if you believe you have a claim, you need to draft a complaint, file it and have it served. Typically, this is a state court action, although it could be filed in federal court if the defendant is not an Illinois resident and the amount of damages alleged are over $75,000. There are quite a few defenses to these types of cases and often, damages are difficult to quantify.
