Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
stolen property
i am a cosmetology student...when we started school we were given a kit of supplies, that was included into our tuition costs. when i was not at school one day, the directors at my school cut locks off several lockers one of which was mine and threw away its contents to make room for new students. i am still currently a student, i was never made aware that i needed to remove my things otherwise i would have. the contents of my locker were both expensive and necesary to have to do my job/classwork. what can i do? if they do not replace my things could i sue them?

Re: stolen property
Yes, you can sue them. You can sue just about anyone for just about anything. The real question is whether it would be worth the time, expense and stress to file a law suit.
In this situation, I would request a meeting with an administrator from the school during which you explain that, even as a current student, your locker was emptied and its contents thrown away without any prior notice that you had to empty your locker on your own. (It's particularly important that they gave you no advance notice, because you would be required to empty your locker -- which is actually the school's locker -- at the school's request.)
You can threaten to sue the school, but you should then be prepared to follow up on your threat. Once you threaten legal action, the school might be less likely to treat you nicely and to work things out without judicial interference.
