Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

Vacating and breaking the lease because of fire in the apartment building

Hello,

There was a fire accident in the apartment next to mine and that apartment and the one above it are completely burnt out. My apartment is fine except for smoke and ash. No alarms went-off when the fire happened and the only reason I knew was my neighbor ran to each apartment and banged on the doors to warn us of the fire.

My lease expires at the end of July. I am required to give one months notice before I vacate. Before the fire happended, I infomed the land-lord of my intent to renew the lease. Now I told them that I do not want to renew the lease. They are insisting on a months notice. What are my options?

Thank you,

If you have changed your mind inside the one month required period of notice, you have no choice but to stay an extra month or, depending if your lease allows for it, find another person to assume your lease.
