Legal Question in Health Care Law in Illinois
Medical Practice
Can I file a lawsuit against a doctor who said upsetting things to me during an office visit? To explain, I am 21 years old, I saw a general surgeon last year for a lump in my right breast. During my visit with the doctor he asked me if I was sure I just didn't have a ''hickey'' on my breast and when he examined my breasts he looked at them and stated ''Wow, why don't you have any nipple rings?'' I felt very violated and it haunts me to this day. I haven't been back to another doctor since even though I am in extreme pain with the lump in my breast. I never sought legal action yet because I have felt embarrased about my story. Please let me know what I can do. Thank you.

Re: Medical Practice
This is an awful story.
I am very sorry that this occurred and it is not indicative of most medical providers.
I would recommend you seek out a female doctor whom will be able to examine your condition.
There is no reason to see a general surgeon in particular for this condition - you need a mammogram and the sooner the better. Any medical professional or even a physician's assistant will be able to help you.
With regard to the doctor's behavior - the proper course of action is to file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
