Legal Question in Immigration Law in Illinois
citizenship
My husband came here at age 6 (he has a green card from then & is now 58). He was in the service in the early 70's, signed a paper of intent to become a citizen and his discharge papers have 'yes' checked in the 'citizen' box. Would he be able to get a US passport based on this? If he did have to go the whole citizenship route is it any easier because he's been here so long?

Re: citizenship
Dear Inquirer:
Your husband's indication of an intent to become a US Citizen, alone, is most likely not enough to make him a US Citizen now. He would have to have either filed an application for naturalization or become a citizen by operation of law, i.e. derived naturalization through his parents, for his citizenship to have been automatic.
There are speciual programs for veterans to naturalize, with generally easier requirements that those for the general population.
