My wife is a Mexican citizen who is now a Permanent Resident. I am wanting get a ITIN number for her mother and sister who are here legally on tourist visas, but who I support completely most of the year. Will obtaining this ITIN number adversely affect them in any way?

There is some possibility in the future that if such number is obtained too close to a visitor entry and there is no reason for it apart from staying indefinitely or permanently, then such action would evidence permanent intent to reside in the U.S. Today, such information is not easy for CIS to see, but they get smarter everyday. While federal agencies aren't terrific about sharing information, they're getting better at it.

You can't know the answer to this.

The above is general information, not legal advice, and does not form an attorney client relationship. For further information, contact me at [email protected] or 818 609 1953.
