Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Illinois

My Girlfriend admitted herself to the hospital with depression and was diagnosed with being Bi-Polar, is it legal for the hospital to refuse to release her, even though it is her wish and she is non-harmful to herself or others?

This is not an intellectual property question, which would involve copyrights, trademarks, etc. That being said, there is a difference between not being released, and being held prisoner. Are they actually preventing her from getting up and leaving?
