Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Illinois

What is publishing copyrights? I'm getting images created for my business and the person creating them will not give full copyrights, they will only agree to publishing copyrights. What doe this mean for my business and how will this affect me in the future. I will use these images for many products, books, clothing, video, etc. and the person knows my intentions for the images.

Thank you

1 Answer from Attorneys

Artists typically "own" the images they create, even if you've paid them for them, unless you contractually agreed that you would be the owner of the images. As such all you would have the right to do is "use" them -- ie. to publish the images, presumably without having to pay any additional fees. You should talk to an attorney about an appropriate contract for your intended uses, especially if you may want to obtain a federal trademark registration.
