If you have no work contract (either union, or employer contract) sounds like you are about to be fired. Welcome to Illinois where you can be fired for any or no reason, and you can quit for any or no reason. At the same time, if you are fired and they don't make a stink, you would be eligible for unemployment insurance. If you know of this situation you should act and if you have any goodwill with the employer, find out whether the intent is to retain you in some other position, and then judge whether they are telling you the truth when they reply -- they may just lie to you to have you hang around until they can install the niece into your office.
