Demotion pay
in Illinois is it legal to demote an employee and lower there pay? I work as an Office Manager and was told yesterday that I didn't have enough education for the position that I have been holding for the last seven month. I had the choice to move to an ''Office Helper'' positions basically doing the same thing that I am doing now, but for 8 dollars an hr. Can they do this to me? Also I was told that my position was going to go to someone with more education and be renamed Executive Assistant and that there would no longer be an Office Manager position, even though I found out that an opening for my job was posted on monster Dec. 13th and I was ''removed'' from my position Jan 4 2007 . on last question can an employer put audio recording devices in the offices I am aware that they can video record you, I didn't know that the could audio record you without your permission

Hello. I understand your frustration. This is a serious matter. I am sure this cut in your salary has really affected your life. If you can prove that your demotion was discriminatory, you have a lawsuit against your employer. You need to let a lawyer look at your facts. You will definitely need a lawyer. This is complicated. Also, you will need witnesses who will testify that you have been discriminated against because of your race, sex, etc. As to your last question, your employer must notify you that your conversations are being recorded. Otherwise, in my opinion, there is a violation of the Federal Eavesdropping law. Will be happy to discuss this with you further and in more detail.
