Anything is possible depending on the terms and conditions of employment. In Illinois the right to fire/quit is "at will" meaning they can fire anytime and you can quit anytime, unless there is some contractual arrangement to the contrary. Proving the terms of your employment, without a written employment agreement and/or other proof of the terms, could leave you with nothing. See an attorney to go over the situation more completely and see if there's anything that can be done.
