Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
Employee/Manager Conflict
Several times my manager has shown a bias against me. He said that two emails I sent him were ''negative'' and were a sign that I am frustrated with changes that are taking place at the company. One email related a problem with our paperwork that an outside vendor pointed out. I was simply relaying his statements and even offered a solution. He also accused me of deliberately sleeping extra hours before making an 8-hour drive home in order to get more OT pay, even though he worked with me until the early hours of the morning and knew I did not get a night's rest. He sent me a disciplinary letter for ''being negative'' about change even though a co-worker is consistently critical of changes at the company and has expressed it several times to him in my presence. One time my manager even told him to not be negative and yet he did not send him a disciplinary letter. He wanted to include two incidents from last year in the letter but I called him on it so he took them out. Even the two emails were from last year but he included them in this year's review, which is only for this year. Most of his accusations have been on the phone so I have no proof and fear retaliation if I take the matter to his manager. What should I do?

Re: Employee/Manager Conflict
Be careful, if this is a private employer you are probably an "at will employee" and can be let go for any reason. I suggest you keep a log of all suspicious behavior by your manager because there are legal grounds to sue if you are discharged. Do you have a copy of your contract handy?
