Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
My employer sent me a notice that I will be having around 400$ of my wages garnished. However, the social security number and address do not match! The person is not me, and it is not my debt. I believe I defaulted on this because I did not respond to this inquiry. Was it the payroll department's responsibility to verify my identity, and what legal recourse do I have to make sure I am not paying another person's debt?

If you were not properly sued but ignored the lawsuit and so a judgment was entered against you, this was your doing. You had a right (and obligation) to go to court and have the case against you dismissed. Unless you want to handle undoing this mess yourself and risk being unsuccessful, it would be wise to have an attorney help you at this point in particular.
