Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

fired from restaurant

I was recently let go from my server job in chicago. Now I am aware that restaurants don't even need to give a reason for firing a server. They could even say that they hate red heads so I'm fired. However I was let go after expressing (through their ''open door policy) dissatisfaction of the over staffing of the floor resulting In a major pay cut among other things I and other staff members were concerned with. I was was fired a week later for being observed throwing away plate ware by a busboy who is sleeping with the GM. I did not do this but this bus boy and another(his cousin) signed papers saying I did. Now of course I don't want to work at this place wich used to be a good job but has fallen apart. I am concerned of what they would tell a new restaurant that calls this GM for a referance. I worked there for two years and would like to keep this place on my resume to show no lapse in employment. A friend mentioned she is not allowed to tell potential employers why I was let go. I was wondering if this is true. If she is found to be doing so what my options are. Thank you for your time.

Re: fired from restaurant

Ask them for a letter of reference and in return you will not cause any trouble.
