Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I am being forced to cut my previously scheduled shift to my employer's specifications because they do not want to pay me overtime that was incurred because of a meeting that they set outside of my scheduled shifts. Shouldn't I be able to work my shifts up until the 40hr mark and decide whether or not I want to work more?

Not unless you have an employment contract or are subject to a collective bargaining agreement which would allow you to do this.
