Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
If I forget to lock up a garage or door at work and leave the premises, and then later something of value is found to have been stolen by someone who got through the unlocked garage/door, could I be compelled to pay back my employer for the lost item(s)?

Illinois law says that employees are generally not liable for damages caused by their negligence, but that won't stop your employer from trying and, if you refuse, or even if you don't they may be able to terminate you anyhow and even if wrongful would be an uphill battle. So in the end....? For more details about the prospects and consequences of this kind of situation, see an attorney, especially if your job may be at risk.
