Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
The manager of the HR department where I work, shares information/Gossips with employees about other employees. Is this legal, and what can I do about it. For example she talks to other employees/ her friends about another employee calling in when they are out of sick days. Or if there is a problem with two employees not getting along, she discloses this information to her friends in the company. Isn't this against labor laws concerning privacy? Any info would be great. Thank you.

Yes there is something very wrong with this, but what do you risk by going to management? Or even outside the company? As long as you aren't the object of her inappropriate behavior and can keep under the radar, then you may have to wait until somebody gets burned and makes noise about it. Otherwise you run the risk of becoming a scapegoat. I'm all for being principled but it's up to you in our difficult economy. You're best bet may be, if she tries to "lure" you into some of her gossip, is to just find a polite excuse to get away from her as soon as possible. Alternatively, if she does so, you might ask her (in privacy) whether she's worried whether someone might take offense and say something -- her answer might be very revealing, and then leave her hanging. But again is it worth it to you?
