Can they reduce my salary if I was demoted in rank for financial reasons only?

Unless you have a union behind you or another kind of contractual arrangement at work that includes some kind of job security or grievance procedure, Illinois gives no protection to employees, but also says employees can quit any time they want. Same with employers; you're at their mercy and good faith but they can fire you, demote you, reduce your salary, or whatever. The only things they can't do is discriminate against you for certain specific reasons: race, age, sex . . .
