Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Terminated

I worked for a small internet company for the past 3 years. Actually, I was one of the first few employees. About 8 months ago, I relocated to NY to do my same job, with the same company, only in NY. Essentially, I relocated for them. Well, I was terminated yesterday b/c they said my position has been eliminated. However, I've come to discover that there is another person from the Chicago office relocating to NY to do my job. So, first is IL an at-will employment state...is NY an at-will state, and do I have any recourse for this ''wrongful'' termination??? thanks!

Re: Terminated

Both Illinois and New York recognize an at-will employment relationship absent a contractual or statutory obligation to the contrary. Since you did not indicate the existence of an employment contract, the primary statutory obligations protecting you are discrimination-type claims, i.e., age discrimination, gender discrimination, race discrimination, disability discrimination, etc.

If none of these applies to you, it seems quite difficult to make out a case. However, you should examine carefully the agreement you had w/your employer regarding your relocation to NY. Was there a promise that, if you did so, you would only be terminated for cause?
