Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
Unpaid severance
I was laid off from a large financial institution in February and was offered a number of weeks of severance pay plus a ''one time payment'' of $5000. I accepted the offer and have received the severance but have not received the $5000. My repeated calls to the contacts I was given on my severance letter have not been returned. What should I do?

Re: Unpaid severance
You have a breach of contract claim with your former employer. In order to prove your claim, you will need evidence of the severance package. Was anything in writing? What evidence do you have that your employer agreed to pay you $5,000? Did other laid-off employees have the same package?
You may probably file suit in small claims court to recover the amounts due and owing. Prior to doing so, however, I would recommend that you contact your former employer & see if something can be worked out.
