Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

My wife worked full time as a Thai chef for a couple of months about a year and a half ago. When she was new on the job (a few weeks) she was injured and burned on her shoulder by hot water. She was treated and released and I used my own insurance. She did have to take time off of work and when she returned to work she was put on only part-time. She left the job. As my wife looks for work now, the owner of the restaurant she was injured at is telling other restaurants in the area that my wife sued him. We did not sue anybody and other restaurants are hearing the lie that my wife sued her last employer and they would rather employ illegal aliens rather than a permanent resident, who they have been told tried to sue her last employer. Can I do anything to the owner of the restaurant who is spreading lies and making it more difficult for my wife to find employment.

It is possible to seek legal action against the former employer for both the injury and a possible defamation claim. Please consult an attorney with the details of this matter.
