Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I work as a Auto Body Technician. Is it illegal for my employer to charge me for parts that I may break while working on customers vehicles? Also is it legal for them to make me pay for a tow bill for a vehicle that came back for an overheating issue?

Illinois is among those States that I still consider part of the "Wild West". Illinois statutes Chapter 820 Employment, 820 ILCS 115/ "Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act", does not prohibit deductions for breakage (other states do -- NY and Hawaii for example). But if you're part of a union there may be a collective bargaining agreement that prohibits this kind of deduction. But even when it is an allowed deduction, the issue is whether you were made aware of the policy before you were slapped with a deduction; did you have NOTICE. If not you have a gripe. And if you're an auto body technician who only does body work why would you be responsible for an overheating problem PLUS the tow. Again it's an issue of notice to you before you're charged with these deductions.

I remember working in a major downtown Chicago hotel and on the main kitchen wall was a complete display of every piece of china used by the hotel in table service, and next to each piece was a price -- if you broke it, you bought it.
